His current record is 2 wins and 3 losses with a 5.94 ERA. | | Wednesday, April 15th, 2009: 5 Hits for Smokies Covington It was a good day for the Moreno Valley Realtors as they dumped the Asheville Smokies 6-5 at Biltmore Field. Despite the loss it was a remarkable day for Smokies Bob Covington, who went on quite a hitting spree with a 5 for 5 barrage.
The Asheville center fielder told reporters after his big 5-hit performance, "I have mixed emotions about this game. Getting 5 hits is really something special, but losing the ballgame spoils it to a certain extent. It's sort of like the feeling you get when your mother-in-law drive over a cliff in your new sports car."
For his outstanding performance Covington will get his name in the record book.
Quizzed by the press corps about his personal hitting theories, he responded, "I don't have any buzz words. I'm 'not dialed in' or 'in a zone,' as they say. As far as the hitting goes, I try to keep it simple...try not to over-think it. I try not to look into it too much. Basically the pitcher throws the ball, I try to pick up the spin, then in a split second decide to try to hit it. Today I picked up the spin very well."
B. Covington singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, doubled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off A. Abrina in the 8th.
This year Covington is batting .414 with 12 hits, 2 home runs, 4 RBIs, no walks, .414 OBP and has scored 8 runs. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 37-43, .463 PCT | | Position in Division | 4th, 9.0 GB | | Record at home | 18-21, .462 PCT | | Record on the road | 19-22, .463 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 2-0, 1.000 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 8-9, .471 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 16-10, .615 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 21-33, .389 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 6-4, .600 PCT | | Record in April | 12-16, .429 PCT | | Record in May | 11-18, .379 PCT | | Record in June | 14-9, .609 PCT |
